Student-Athletes

Great expectations, stellar achievements

Husky student-athletes soar to impressive heights of academic excellence in 2014-15

University of Washington student-athletes achieved at a higher level academically in the last year than any year in recent memory, with more than two-thirds earning GPAs of at least 3.0. Most schools brag when half their student-athletes do so well.

“We are all so proud of these young men and women,” says Kim Durand, UW’s associate athletic director of student development. “They continue to achieve amazing results while competing at the highest level.”

Some student-athletes come to UW exceptionally well prepared for college. Others catch up in reading, math or other skills with the help of one-to-one tutoring or after they’re assessed by a learning specialist who maps out a game plan for overcoming learning disabilities such as dyslexia or ADHD, which often go undiagnosed before college.

“With little adjustments, we help students flourish,” Kim says. “It can be life changing.”

Year after year, thanks to the generosity of donors like you, our young student-athletes build confidence in their ability to succeed as students — preparing them for life and careers after college.

In the years to come, we hope to expand students’ access to in-demand counseling and sport psychology services and make sure that students don’t simply graduate, but walk away with internships, jobs, admission to graduate school — their action plan for a bright future.
